Environmental Change

Examine the role of one international civil society organization in fostering improved environmental management.

WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) is founded to build a future in which people live in harmony with nature. To be specific, their main works are Protecting species, Conserving places, Tackling threats, Influencing policy, Transforming business and Empowering communities.

For example, <Picture 1> below shows the tissue container which has a hole at the front. The hole seems like a map of Amazon in Brazil and the color of tissue is green, which represents that trees in Amazon are natural raw sources for paper. As people use the tissue, the green part disappears. It implies that we destroy the nature, especially the trees in Amazon, when we waste the paper tissue.

<Picture 2> is the poster created by WWF. It is also connected with "Save the Paper". Amazon is known as the lung of the world since Amazon produces the largest amount of oxygen we breathe. However, the waste of paper by human leads to the deforestation and it causes the lack of natural sources for paper. WWF usually creates stimulating or thrilling posters in order to attract people's attention and interests.

With such examples, WWF plays a significant part in fostering improved environmental management. The site of WWF provides more specific details about their works and they even suggest the tasks that we can do for the environment. In addition, WWF is closely connected with social networks such as Facebook and Twitter, therefore, more people can easily access to the campaigns and posters.

  1. This is an nice topic as people no matter who they are or how old they are get interested when seeing these interesting designs. Although these may look simple, they leave deep messages that actions we take may affect our environment. Another one that caught my interest was Save The Polar Bear campaign by one of the organizations in Korea which I saw in Teddy Bear museum three years ago. Although it was simple where they showed 3D display of polar bears only having little amounts of ice floes to stay. However, it was so clear to people that global warming from human activities are affecting our environment. Also there was a big polar bear doll where I took picture with. Through this experience, I got interested in looking for these campaigns and learned that there are so many organizations doing these to foster improved environmental management. The works of these organization may look simple but those unique and creative works leave a deep message to people thereby making people aware that what we do influence our environment.

  2. I think you really chose the right international civil society organization that is trying to improve environment which is WWF. Because WWF is mostly known to people, your thoughts made me easier to understand your points and everything. Also, in picture 2, I like that you made your example clear for all the readers to understand.
